The A List

In my short time in Madrid, I have already been to the cine (movie theater) three times -- more than I usually go in one year at home! All of the movies were over two hours; I truly put my attention span to the test, but it was well worth it. Per my dad's recommendation I went to see Avatar in 3D (in English with Spanish subtitles), and I was blown away!

I also gave myself the challenge of seeing El Secreto de sus Ojos, an Argentinian film by Campanella that is up for an Oscar or two. I probably grasped about 40% of the dialogue, but the storyline was incredible. Two thumbs up!

Last night I went to see Alejandro Amenabar's Agora. I was expecting it to be in Spanish but was pleasantly surprised to hear English instead! The film details the religious conflict in Alexandria in the 4th century -- specifically the Christian church's oppression of Pagans and Jews.

And, what would a trip to the movies be without a comment about food? Like those in the United States, Spanish cinemas still sell over-priced fountain soda, popcorn, and candy. However, the main difference lies in the portion size. The largest drink offered here is about 1/3 the size of our super-sized cup, and the candy sold here is a little larger than a "fun pack" of M&Ms...
